A kingfisher is reflected as it dives effortlessly head first in to the water. Rob Sawer spent five weeks watching a family of the birds at the River Alde in Suffolk. He captured this sight after setting up a glass tank full of fish under the water. Mr Sawer, from Saxmundham, Suffolk, said: "I submerged a glass tank in the river, popped in some fish, set up the flashes and focused the camera on the centre of the tank. I pressed the shutter just before the bird entered the water. There is a lot of luck involved as to the position of the bird and I had several near misses."

A woman from Maanshan in eastern China's Anhui Province got her head stuck in the vehicle's closing doors. She was attempting to get off the No137 bus at her stop, but the driver was obviously impatient to get going and closed the doors quickly, just as the woman poked her head out. The doors slammed around her neck, leaving her body inside the bus and her head outside. Seeing the incident the other passengers shouted at the driver to open the doors, which he did. Once released the woman climbed off the bus and quickly walked away, rubbing her neck, without making a complaint.

The American flag flaps in the breeze against the backdrop of a halo around the sun at the US track and field championships in Eugene, Oregon. These rings are caused by cirrus clouds and moisture as high as 30,000 feet where the temperatures are well below freezing. The moisture turns into ice crystals, and the sunlight then reflects off these ice crystals creating a halo or ring.
